What you wear, whether you want to admit it or not, has an impact on how you feel and how others perceive you. It can also reveal a lot about how you feel about yourself too. Clothes have a transformative power. They can lift our spirits, boost our self-esteem and enhance our confidence, making us feel ready for the day ahead. The wrong outfit choice can do the exact opposite.
We’ve all heard the saying ‘There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong choice in clothing right?’. Well, this blog post is a quick hack into building a wardrobe that works for you everyday.
This is why knowing what works best for you and in different situations, depending on your life style is also key. Take for example the world of work. It is changing fast and for many industries the traditional suit or 2 piece is now being seen as quite out of date and smart casual can be really confusing. So, how does one navigate through the world of work, life and fashion? Start with looking at your lifestyle and answer these three magic questions:
- Where do I spend most of my time?
- What are my leisure pursuits?
- How do I like to relax?
These questions will guide you in the right direction.
One of my clients is a communications professional so she spends 4 days a week in an office. She needs something comfortable and smart. Plus she feels the cold a lot in autumn and winter.
She walks everywhere and has a dog and a lot of her leisure time is built around walking outdoors in the city. Her wardrobe is largely split between smart casual work wear and flat shoes. She has a slim, athletic figure (lucky her!).
Below is a small sample of my recommendations based on her overall lifestyle and taste (including key undergarments vests, thick tights and kidney warmers):
With so much to choose from it can get confusing. Plus with so much on offer, knowing where to start can be hard. If you want a helping hand give me a shout otherwise, use the 3 magic questions and let your instinct guide you.
So my advice as a stylist is simple:
Know your lifestyle, follow your taste and you can’t go far wrong in my opinion.
Here’s to making the right decision everyday and feeling damn good about it.
